Save the Tanby Road Trees A
small but vocal crowd including CCC Coordinator, Janet Barrett,
gathered on Tanby Road last Saturday morning, 9 January, to protest the
imminent removal of a stand of trees by Rockhampton Regional Council.
Ear-marked for destruction to widen Tanby Road to four lanes of
traffic, the beautiful, mature trees include Eucalyptus species. For
some decades these trees have provided habitat for birds, insects, and
marsupials as well as shade for local residents and visual amenity for
the community. The group’s spokesman and Keppel Greens’ member, Paul Bambrick, says ‘Bigger roads and fewer trees is not the answer. Demolishing these street trees in Tanby Road and our signature pines from the main street is a very limited and wilful interpretation of council’s duty-of-care’. The group believes there are other solutions to the removal of the trees, including a less-centralised township, staggered school times for arrivals/departures, lower speed limits, and use of public transport. You only have to look at townships in the Blue Mountains where trees are protected by law to know that this is workable. Show your support by signing the petition to save these trees at Woody’s in Yeppoon. ![]() |
