Balaclava Island-
There are major coal ports at Mackay and Gladstone. Do we
really want another one at the mouth of the Fitzroy River just
southeast of Rocky? See website of KAFDA- Keppel And Fitzroy Delta Alliance Do we want to have a mega-industrial
complex at the southern end on Keppel Bay, clearly visible from the
Capricorn Coast? Is it wise to have huge coal laden ships
navigating the shallow seas east of the Fitzroy River mouth? This
port is just the toe-hold for a four-stage mega development. Become a KAFDA supporter ... read more > |

Waratah EIS released - Bimblebox Nature Refuge to be destroyed - Offsets strategy a joke
Waratah Coal have released their Environmental Impact Statement for
their monster mine in the Galilee Basin near Alpha. This mine will
effectively destroy Bimblebox Nature Refuge. The joke is that the
company can use an "offset" to get away with this, and the area set
aside for the offset can be protected by - a Nature Refuge. This gives
it no more protection than Bimblebox. |

Commercial harvest of corals
in the Keppel Island region of the southern inshore Great Barrier Reef
raises concern about the depletion of a number of relatively rare
restricted range species of coral. The shift appears to be driven by
demand from theUSA for corals for domestic aquaria. |

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) The
race is on to deliver Australia's first LNG from coal seam gas (CSG)
and it's happening from the Port of Gladstone. The Federal
Environment Minister granted approval with hundreds of conditions to
two LNG projects and the Gladstone Harbour Dredging Project.
We have summarised the main ones.
But what are the
environmental costs? The local fishing industry has been virtually
wiped out, and yet GPC say there is nothing wrong with this enormous
dregding project. |
